Hemmings Daily: Walter P. Chrysler Museum to close at end of the year

Monday, December 3, 2012

Posted by Daniel Strohl - Photo courtesy Chrysler Media. After losing money for the last few years, the Walter P. Chrysler Museum will close its doors at the end of the year when Chrysler buys its vehicles and exhibits. The three-story, 55,000-square-foot museum opened in October 1999 in Auburn Hills, Michigan, on the same campus as the Chrysler corporate headquarters. It boasted a 125-seat theater, along with a centerpiece rotating platform that featured some of the museum's prized possessions. However, as Chrysler faced bankruptcy in l... Read On>>

Hemmings Find of the Day - 1940 Mercury Eight convertible sedan

Posted by Daniel Strohl - Apparently offered for just one year, the four-door convertible sedan body style, as seen on this 1940 Mercury Eight for sale on Hemmings.com, is understandably rare, so it provides something a little different, even for the Ford or Mercury collector who thought he's seen it all. This particular example looks to be in immaculate condition, thanks to an extensive restoration. From the seller's description: This Extremely Rare and Highly optioned 1940 Mercury Convertible, also known as a 1940 Mercury Eight 4 door sed...Read On>>

Last year, Mark McCourt and I tagged along behind the pack in one of our Hemmings minivans, a Honda Odyssey that was ... not terribly British. Club member Rick Johnson invited me to return this year, luring me with the offer of a ride in something much more appropriate: An Austin-Healey "Bugeye" Sprite. How could I say no? Not for nothing is Rick known as the "Bugeye Bum" - he has...Read On>>

SIA Flashback - GM's Glamorous Threesome for 1953: Cadillac Eldorado, Buick Skylark, Oldsmobile Fiesta

Posted by Daniel Strohl - It's a favorite of longtime car collectors to gather each of the special semi-custom GM cars of 1953 - the Cadillac Eldorado, Buick Skylark, and Oldsmobile Fiesta (some even include the first-year Corvette in that list) - particularly in matching color combinations, so it's no surprise that SIA eventually put together a comparison of the three, highlighting exactly what made the cars so special, written by John G. Tennyson for SIA #134, March 1993. ...Read On>>
