Sasol reports rise in SA output, pushes ahead with big US projects |
 | JSE-listed energy and chemicals group Sasol on Monday said that, despite challenging conditions, it expected to maintain its full-year Synfuels production guidance of between 7.2-million and 7.4-million tons. Sasol Synfuels recorded a production of 1.8-million tons during the first quarter of the 2013 financial year, compared with the 1.6-million tons reported in the corresponding period in the prior year. By October, the synfuels unit had produced 2.4-million tons. Full Article |

CP Rail drops plan to push into Powder River |
Canadian Pacific Railway will take a C$180-million charge to abandon plans to expand into the Powder River coal-mining region in the US states of Wyoming and Montana, citing weakness in the thermal coal market. Canada's No 2 railway acquired the option to build a 260-mile extension into coal region of north-eastern Wyoming and southeastern Montana as part of its C$1.48-billion purchase of the Dakota Minnesota and Eastern Railroad in 2007. Canada approves Baffin Island iron mine |
Canada on Monday said it had approved the Mary River project, owned and operated by Baffinland Iron Mines, which is jointly owned by ArcelorMittal and Iron Ore Holdings. The Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Minister John Duncan, and Minister of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency and Minister for the Arctic Council Leona Aglukkaq today announced today the approval of the Baffinland Mary River project based on the recommendation of the Nunavut Impact Review Board. Clinton in Prague to lobby for Westinghouse nuclear bid |
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will seek to convince Czech leaders of the advantages of picking US firm Westinghouse over a Russian rival as the contractor for a $10 billion nuclear reactor project in meetings in Prague on Monday. US officials traveling with Clinton to Prague said the Temelin nuclear power project could bring as many as 9 000 jobs to the United States and would help diversify the Czech Republic's energy supply away from Russia. The world's number two gold miner Newmont Mining on Monday said president and COO Gary Goldberg would take over from outgoing CEO Richard O'Brien on March 1, 2013, when O'Brien retires. Randgold says DRC gold project receives ball mills |
Development of the significant Kibali gold project, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), has achieved a significant advance with the arrival on site of the two ball mills that would form the heart of its metallurgical plant. The two European-built 7 MW mills, each weighing 170 t, were transported in six sections, initially from Antwerp and then by road from the Port of Mombasa, in Kenya through Uganda to Doko, in the north-east of the DRC, a trip of 1 800 km, which took about six weeks. Atlanta Gold given more time to pay water pollution penalty |
Gold project developer Atlanta Gold Corporation (AGC) on Monday said the US District Court for the State of Idaho has granted it a six-month extension of the time to pay the $2-million court-imposed penalty from October 31, 2012 to April 30, 2013. The outstanding penalty will bear interest at about 10% a year from November 28, until it is paid in full. Full Article |

Vale chief sees iron-ore prices $110 to 140/t in 2013 |
Brazil's Vale CEO Murilo Ferreira said he expects iron ore prices to range between $110/t and $140/t next year. Spot iron-ore prices were at $116.90/t last week. Chile approves Endesa 740 MW coal-powered project |
A Chilean ministerial group has lifted a suspension on energy firm Endesa's 740 MW Punta Alcalde coal-fired thermoelectric project, the company said on Monday, in a boon for miners in the mineral-rich north of the world's No 1 copper-producing nation.
