Denel, Airbus Military sign renegotiated A400M contract
South African aerospace company Denel Aerostructures (DAe), part of the State-owned Denel defence industrial group, signed a renegotiated agreement with Airbus Military in Kempton Park on Monday covering the South African company's participation in the A400M military airlift programme. DAe manufactures the wing/fuselage fairings and the fuselage top shells for the A400M. Full Article

Local company close to winning extra work on A400M aircraft
Denel Aerostructures (DAe) is very close to concluding a contract to manufacture the ribs, sword and spars for the vertical tail planes for the Airbus Military A400M military transport aircraft. These parts are manufactured largely from composites. This workwould be in addition to the components the local company already manufactures for the European aeroplane. Tyre industry legally obliged to subscribe to Redisa plan by Friday
The Recycling and Development Initiative of South Africa (Redisa) said on Monday that the South African tyre industry was legally obliged to subscribe to its Integrated Industry Waste Tyre Management Plan (IIWTMP) by the end of the week. This follows a High Court ruling on Monday that tyre producers without an IIWTMP or which did not belong to an existing IIWTMP would, from September 21, not be entitled to manufacture, import new, part-worn, retreadable casing or vehicles fitted with tyres... Solar car challenge gets under way on Tuesday Video
Winstone Jordaan Sasol's Solar Challenge South Africa was set to kick off on Tuesday after 12, mostly academic, teams completed multiple final vehicle testing processes at Zwartkop Raceway, in Pretoria, on Monday. The competition, which was held by the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile every two years, would see seven locally built and two internationally constructed solar-powered vehicles travel over 5 000 km over an 11-day period, said race director Winstone Jordaan. Paramount Group seeks further expansion in developing countries Video
Africa's largest privately owned aerospace and defence company Paramount Group said it would continue to expand its business in the developing world, which had a "huge requirement" for defence and security products. Paramount Group CEO John Craig told Engineering News Online that the company would focus on developing countries, as North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, or Nato, countries were well served with their own defence industries. SA strike not denting budget forecast yet
South Africa sees no need yet to revise the outlook for its fiscal performance in its 2012 budget plan even if there has been revenue loss due to problems in the mining industry, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said on Sunday. But in an interview in the Swedish capital ahead of a conference on Monday, Gordhan said the mining problems needed to end as soon as possible and he hoped increased security measures would allow for successful negotiations between employers and employees. New incubation support programme to boost small businesses
The Department of Trade and Industry has established a new incubation support programme to develop enterprises that would absorb and upgrade South Africa's vast unskilled labour force, develop new technologies and strengthen the country's economy, Minister Rob Davies has announced. Cell C aims to boost mobile market share
South Africa's third-largest mobile phone operator, Cell C, is adding about 700 000 new subscribers a month after sharp price cuts to take market share from bigger rivals MTN and Vodacom, its newly appointed head said on Monday. The unlisted company, in which Saudi Telecom has an indirect stake, plans to have up to a quarter of South Africa's mobile subscribers in four years from 13% now, Chief Executive Alan Knott-Craig said in an interview. RBA H1 results improve, but still disappointing – CEO
Local affordable homes builder RBA Holdings on Monday reported an 11% increase in revenue for the six months to the end of June to R92-million, citing continued benefits being reaped from its turnaround strategy. Total profit attributable to ordinary shareholders was R500 000, an improvement from the R2.4-million loss incurred the previous comparable period. Headline earnings a share came in at 0.44c, up from last year's loss of 0.26c a share. Full Article

Five SA firms named in sustainability index
Five South African companies were listed on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), which tracks the financial performance of sustainability-driven companies worldwide. Gold Fields, Investec, Nedbank, Sasol and Woolworths were included in the index following an assessment of their economic, environmental and social performance against that of their global counterparts. Ceta grants R347m for skills development

Police stop Malema from addressing miners
South African police stopped African National Congress (ANC) renegade Julius Malema from addressing a group of striking miners on Monday, a Reuters witness said, as the government sought to contain labour unrest in the country's mines. After arguing with police in Marikana, about 100 km northwest of Johannesburg, Malema was escorted out of the area in his vehicle, the witness added. Full Article
