Hemmings Daily: Upcoming TV show aims to reunite people with their old cars

Friday, September 14, 2012

Posted by Daniel Strohl - Perhaps the only fantasy in the collector car world as common as the "I wish I had a time machine to go back and buy all the cool cars before they got expensive" daydream is the one in which people wish they had their old high-school car back. In most cases, however, that old high-school car disappeared decades ago, presumably never to be seen again. A new TV show, however, aims to change all that. Restoration Reunion, a show currently in development from London- and Santa Monica-based Firecracker Films, has put ... Read On>>

Hemmings Find of the Day - 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk

Posted by Daniel Strohl - It's got the fins, it's got the supercharger, it's got the manual transmission, it's got the chrome and the whitewalls, and most important it's sporting a fresh and thorough restoration, so what's not to like about this 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk for sale on Hemmings.com? From the seller's description: 1957 Studebaker Golden Hawk with fabulous Raymond Loewy design including unmistakeable European/Italian influence apparent in the Mercedes like front end but definitely 1950s with those huge rear fins! 1957 is recog...Read On>>

Baker's dozen of Minis pop up for auction

Posted by Daniel Strohl - Photos courtesy Auctions America. It's safe to say that Dr. Terry Bennett amassed an eclectic collection in coastal New Hampshire. Among the several dozen cars, almost as many motorcycles and vintage bicycles, no clear theme to the collection stands out as it heads toward dispersal by Auctions America by RM later this month. Yet we can discern a few dominating interests from a number of clusters within the collection, including the dozen or so Minis and Mini derivatives. Minis aren't the hallmark of the collecti...Read On>>

Recommended Reading - Crestline books

Posted by Richard Lentinello - For serious automotive enthusiasts, historians and journalists, the most important books ever published are those known as the Crestline books. Each volume is the most thoroughly assembled automotive book ever published, showcasing just about every single model car, in every single body style, from every single year that was produced by a particular auto manufacturer. A truly exhausting compilation that will most probably never be surpassed. Every single model car listed is illustrated with a black-and-white phot...Read On>>

"Smokey and the Bandit" director Hal Needham to get honorary Oscar

Posted by Daniel Strohl - For far too long, the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has concerned itself with honoring highfalutin fancy-pants arteests, so it's nice to see the Academy finally shine the spotlight on a true visionary who created timeless works of art, a legend in his own time: stuntman and director Hal Needham. The man behind such drive-in and VHS rental fare as Cannonball Run, Stroker Ace, and Megaforce (not to mention Smokey and the Bandit II and Cannonball Run II), Needham actually got his start in moti...Read On>>

Hemmings Finds of the Day - 1969 McLaren and 1969 Lola Can-Am cars

Posted by Daniel Strohl - Despite what quantum physics tells us, we can't drive two cars at the same time. Maybe we could if cloning technology were a little more advanced. Or if time travel were possible, but then we'd be racing against younger or older versions of ourselves. Transporter malfunctions could potentially provide same-age duplicates of ourselves to race against, but then they'd be evil. Anyway. Once we get that little detail worked out, we're buying this 1969 McLaren and 1969 Lola for sale on Hemmings.com and racing head-to-hea...Read On>>

Ball State University students preparing documentary of Indiana-built cars

Posted by Jim Donnelly - Photo courtesy Ball State University. A team of Indiana college students are going farther than most of their peers to understand our automotive past. Twenty-six undergraduate students at Ball State University in Muncie - a town with a terrific automotive heritage in its own right - are doing the legwork to produce a video documentary on the people and cars of Auburn, Indiana. The project members started out late last month at Auburn's garage tour, during which local car enthusiasts invited visitors to examine t...Read On>>

"Tired of being ignored" - improving the last GSX

Posted by Daniel Strohl - Even among the decal GT cars of the 1970s, the 1974 Buick GSX was pretty lame. No high-horsepower engine, no handling package, not even any special wheels, just stripes and poser decals. Buick could certainly have built a better GSX in 1974 - an actual performance car rather than a shameful attempt to capitalize on past glory - but it took Greg Mullen of New Milford, Connecticut, to take up that challenge. Greg, a Pontiac guy, said he wanted to build something different, something that wouldn't get him ignored at...Read On>>

World's largest microcar museum to close, head to auction

Posted by Daniel Strohl - Photos courtesy Bruce Weiner Microcar Museum and RM Auctions. In 1991, Bruce Weiner didn't know what a microcar was. He'd never heard of the diminutive fuel-sipping cars that were popular in post-war Europe and didn't realize the importance of many a microcar in kickstarting European industry. All he knew is that he liked the 1955 Messerschmitt KR200 he spotted in an issue of Hemmings Motor News enough to buy it. Now, more than 200 microcars later, Bruce has decided to disperse his collection of microcars, consider...Read On>>

Hemmings Find of the Day - 1963 Buick Wildcat convertible

Posted by Daniel Strohl - It may just be because I'm an Amish boy from Ohio, but the absence of air conditioning on a convertible - as is the case with this 1963 Buick Wildcat for sale on Hemmings.com - shouldn't be seen as a drawback. I mean, you get hot while driving the car, you put the top down, right? Besides, even without A/C, this 'Cat appears to be a fine California cruiser. From the seller's description: I do not want to let this beauty go, but I have to make room for a new project. This particular car has a Rare and Freshly reb...Read On>>

Great Race "roadies" bring around a rare (to us) Envoy Epic

Posted by Jim O'Clair - At one of the overnight venues in Barrie, Ontario, our towing trailer was stationed almost a mile away from the hotel. Each night, the car would be prepared for the next day's racing: fluid levels checked, bolts tightened and brakes adjusted, etc. As we were completing our checks and putting the race car in the trailer for the night, this Canada-only production 1966 Envoy Epic drove into the parking area to look at the Great Race cars, but we spent more time looking at their car than they did looking at ours. ..Read On>>

Where we're going... yeah, we'll need roads

Posted by Daniel Strohl - Most of us, were we to get laid off from our jobs, would immediately begin the search for another job, maybe do a little prioritizing in our lives, perhaps even take the opportunity to pursue a career change. Ian Yanagisawa of Houston, however, decided to drive across the country. In a 1981 De Lorean DMC-12. We met Ian the other day when he stopped by the Hemmings home offices here in Bennington, Vermont, on the 74th day of his cross-country trip, a little past his halfway point. We've met and wished well many a ...Read On>>

One-off Packard Macauley Speedster to appear at Glenmoor Gathering

Posted by Daniel Strohl - 1952 Macauley Speedster. Photos courtesy Glenmoor Gathering. Ed Macauley may have been the son of Packard President Alvin Macauley, but by many accounts he got his job as the director of styling at Packard due to his eye for design, and his legacy includes a number of striking cars, including the so-called Macauley Speedster, set to appear at this weekend's Glenmoor Gathering. Built in 1952 to replace Macauley's 1933 Brown Bomber - one of Packard's first experimental cars - the Dick Teague-designed two-passenger...Read On>>

Hemmings Find of the Day - 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1

Posted by Daniel Strohl - We don't know exactly where the seller of this 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1 for sale on Hemmings.com found his pony, but we're guessing it was out in the back forty rather than in a barn. Still, it's reportedly an actual J-code car with its original engine and transmission, and the seller's throwing in a parts car, so the ground work for the inevitable restoration has already been laid. From the seller's description: J-code Ram Air 429 Super Cobra Jet. Matching numbers engine and transmission. Speedometer show 38,802 m...Read On>>

The Porsche as graphic art - Porsche Museum highlights work of Hanns Lohrer

Posted by Mark J. McCourt - Images courtesy Porsche In the 1950s and 1960s, Stuttgart painter and commercial graphic designer Hanns Lohrer created some of the most stylish and striking Porsche advertising artwork to ever whet the sports car enthusiast's whistle. The Porsche Museum in Germany is hosting a special exhibit of this talented artist's iconic work, on display now through November 4. The Museum handlers note: A selection of victory posters created by Hanns Lohrer at the close of every year to visually capture Porsche's ...Read On>>

Sir Stirling, still a stud

Posted by Jim Donnelly - When we heard that Sir Stirling Moss was going to be the guest of honor at Lime Rock Park's 30th annual vintage festival over Labor Day weekend, well, we couldn't burn it getting down there fast enough. Sir Stirling exuded a lot of candor about his unforgettable career, which officially ended only last year - he is 83 - and will be the topic of an in-depth, exclusive feature coming soon in Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car. It's been a good 50 years since Sir Stirling, having slithered away from death after a ...Read On>>

Le Mans-winning Aston Martin DBR1/2 heads to the open market

Posted by Daniel Strohl - Aston Martin DBR1/2. Photos courtesy Talacrest. As we saw earlier this year, cars selling for or near world-record prices tend to change hands in private - and we mean behind-six-layers-of-security private - transactions, the cars' availability never broadcast, and the transaction details often never fully revealed. Yet in an intriguing turn of events, Ferrari specialist Talacrest has put the Le Mans-winning Aston Martin DBR1/2 up for sale, at a price that puts it within spitting distance of becoming the world's mo...Read On>>

Hemmings Find of the Day - 1932 Ford Deluxe

Posted by Daniel Strohl - You can't swing a ratty foxtail nowadays without hitting a hot rodded Deuce, but that doesn't mean there aren't nicely restored stock versions out there, such as this 1932 Ford Deluxe for sale on Hemmings.com, a V-8 car in perfect gangster black. From the seller's description: This beautiful, fully stock 1932 Ford Deluxe Roadster is in absolute mint condition. It is an Ohio car that was built in June of 1932. The V8 VIN is on the title, frame and original motor. It underwent a frame off, nut and bolt restoration by...Read On>>

Classic Mini voted the greatest British car of all time

Posted by Dave LaChance - From Britain comes news that the original Mini has been chosen as the greatest British car of all timein a poll of Autocar readers. The British motoring magazine tells us that Alec Issigonis's baby beat the Jaguar E-type and the Range Rover for top honors. (We should note that this news reaches our inboxes not from Autocar, but from the PR folks at BMW, which owns Mini today.) The magazine offers no details about its polling methods - for all we know, the vote was taken in the executive washrooms in Munic...Read On>>

Sizzling at Hot August Nights

Posted by Jim O'Clair - First-generation Camaro and a 1958 Buick Special were among the first cars in the parade. My vacation this year just happened to coincide with the annual Hot August Nights event in Reno and Sparks, and it was an event that was on my bucket list anyway, so I convinced the wife and another couple to humor me for a few hours. Although my flight did not arrive until Saturday afternoon, I was able to see some of the more than 6,000 cars on display throughout the course of the five-day event. The South Lake Tahoe Experie...Read On>>
