South Africa suffers R4.5bn work-stoppage loss – Zuma
Work stoppages on platinum and gold mines had caused a loss of production of R4.5-billion in the last nine months, President Jacob Zuma said on Monday. Addressing the national conference of the Confederation of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), Zuma said that work stoppages in the coal sector added another R118-million loss and close to R3.1-billion had also been subtracted from the national fiscus. Lonmin places K4 under care and maintenance, ends M&R contract
Troubled platinum producer Lonmin announced on Monday that it would place the K4 shaft at its strike-hit Marikana mine, near Rustenburg, under care and maintenance and that it would terminate its contract with Murray & Roberts (M&R) Cementation with effect from October 17. The platinum mining company also lowered its sales forecast to between 685 000 oz and 700 000 oz and said that it was unlikely to meet its previous target of 750 000 oz, citing the illegal Marikana strike, which started on August 10. Shale gas to 'dramatically' change global energy scene
The development of shale gas resources is set to "dramatically" change the energy scene globally and, if managed effectively and responsibly, it could provide an affordable feedstock for cleaner burning gas-fired power plants in South Africa, Frost & Sullivan energy and power industry analyst Dominic Goncalves said on Monday. South Africa, which has the fifth highest estimated technically recoverable shale gas reserves in the world, recently lifted its 18-month moratorium on shale gas development. Full Article

DMR rehabilitates derelict and ownerless mines, not abandoned sites
The Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) has plans for the rehabilitation of derelict and ownerless mines, but will not rehabilitate abandoned mining sites, director Zingaphi Jakuja said on Monday. Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu last week indicated in a Parliamentary question that the DMR had not rehabilitated any abandoned mining sites in the previous two financial years and that it did not plan to rehabilitate any in the 2012/13 year. Police stop Malema from addressing miners
South African police stopped African National Congress (ANC) renegade Julius Malema from addressing a group of striking miners on Monday, a Reuters witness said, as the government sought to contain labour unrest in the country's mines. After arguing with police in Marikana, about 100 km northwest of Johannesburg, Malema was escorted out of the area in his vehicle, the witness added. Full Article

Aquarius, Amplats to resume operations, Lonmin reaffirms offer
Platinum miner Aquarius resumed mining operations at its Kroondal mine, near Rustenburg, on Monday morning, while Anglo American Platinum (Amplats) said it would resume operations on Tuesday. Both companies suspended operations last week after unrest spread through the platinum belt. Full Article

Sylvania shifts focus to low-cost tailings, cuts back on new projects
London-listed Sylvania Platinum on Monday announced it would shift its focus to its low-cost tailings retreatment businesses, while cutting back on work on new near surface mining projects. The company also announced that it had temporarily suspended its Mooinooi and Millsell plants at the western limb operations of its Sylvania Dump Operations (SDO), owing to labour unrest in the Rustenburg area. Forbes Coal Q2 sales, production up
TSX- and JSE-listed coal producer Forbes & Manhattan Coal on Monday reported a 21% quarter-on-quarter increase in sales from its Magdalena bituminous and Aviemore anthracite operations during the second quarter of its 2013 financial year. The coal producer sold 284 196 t of production, 231 802 t of which was bituminous and 52 394 t anthracite product, compared with the 234 997 t in total it sold during the first quarter. Full Article

Rockwell Diamonds revenue up q-on-q
TSX- and JSE-listed Rockwell Diamonds on Monday reported second-quarter revenue of $6.8-million, which was less than a year earlier, but an improvement on its first-quarter revenue. The diamond company earned revenues of $7-million in the second quarter of the 2012 financial year and $5.9-million in the first quarter of the 2013 financial year, said CEO James Campbell. Sentula finds BEE partner for Bankfontein coal project
JSE-listed Sentula on Monday reached an agreement that would see its existing broad-based black economic-empowerment (BBBEE) partner, Shanike Investments, become a 26% shareholder in the Bankfontein coal project. The BBBEE consortium comprises 33% shareholders Anglo American Khula Mining Fund (AAKMF), the Sentula Mining Employee Trust, and the Sentula Mining Empowerment Trust. Sentula, together with AAKMF, is at an advanced stage of introducing a strategic BEE partner as a 40% shareholder, which would dilute the shareholdings of the current companies to 20%. Full Article

Xstrata resumes ops at chrome mine near Rustenburg
Global miner Xstrata resumed operations on Monday at its chrome mine near Rustenburg in South Africa after suspending them last Friday as a precautionary measure due to growing tensions in the region's platinum belt. "The attendance today is full house, although as our employees were coming to work, there has been intimidation which is all over Rustenburg," Christopher Tsatsawane, spokesman for Xstrata Alloys, told Reuters. Bellzone awarded Forécariah mining permit
Junior iron-miner Bellzone Mining has received a 15-year mining licence for its Forécariah project, in Guinea, the Aim-listed company reported on Monday. The permit covers an area of 319 km2 on which the mining operation at Yomboyeli managed by Forecariah Guinea Mining SA (FGMSA) is located. Full Article
