Lonmin places K4 under care and maintenance, ends M&R contract |
Troubled platinum producer Lonmin announced on Monday that it would place the K4 shaft at its strike-hit Marikana mine, near Rustenburg, under care and maintenance and that it would terminate its contract with Murray & Roberts (M&R) Cementation with effect from October 17. The platinum mining company also lowered its sales forecast to between 685 000 oz and 700 000 oz and said that it was unlikely to meet its previous target of 750 000 oz, citing the illegal Marikana strike, which started on August 10. The Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) has plans for the rehabilitation of derelict and ownerless mines, but will not rehabilitate abandoned mining sites, director Zingaphi Jakuja said on Monday. Mineral Resources Minister Susan Shabangu last week indicated in a Parliamentary question that the DMR had not rehabilitated any abandoned mining sites in the previous two financial years and that it did not plan to rehabilitate any in the 2012/13 year. South African police stopped African National Congress (ANC) renegade Julius Malema from addressing a group of striking miners on Monday, a Reuters witness said, as the government sought to contain labour unrest in the country's mines. TSX- and JSE-listed coal producer Forbes & Manhattan Coal on Monday reported a 21% quarter-on-quarter increase in sales from its Magdalena bituminous and Aviemore anthracite operations during the second quarter of its 2013 financial year. The coal producer sold 284 196 t of production, 231 802 t of which was bituminous and 52 394 t anthracite product, compared with the 234 997 t in total it sold during the first quarter. Sentula finds BEE partner for Bankfontein coal project |
JSE-listed Sentula on Monday reached an agreement that would see its existing broad-based black economic-empowerment (BBBEE) partner, Shanike Investments, become a 26% shareholder in the Bankfontein coal project. The BBBEE consortium comprises 33% shareholders Anglo American Khula Mining Fund (AAKMF), the Sentula Mining Employee Trust, and the Sentula Mining Empowerment Trust. Sentula, together with AAKMF, is at an advanced stage of introducing a strategic BEE partner as a 40% shareholder, which would dilute the shareholdings of the current companies to 20%. Full Article |

Global miner Xstrata resumed operations on Monday at its chrome mine near Rustenburg in South Africa after suspending them last Friday as a precautionary measure due to growing tensions in the region's platinum belt.
